WHYFL Spring Update
by posted 05/16/2020

Good morning WHYFL families.

My name is John LaSpada, and I volunteered to help the league with communications. I am a previous WHYFL board member and my wife and I have two boys who played in the league and are now on the Hall football team. I am looking forward to helping the league going forward.

First off, we hope you are all staying safe during these unprecedented times. We understand that this crisis has hit many families in different ways, and we wish the best to all of our players, coaches, volunteers, and their families.

The WHYFL board has continued to host virtual meetings to continue offseason planning for the 2020 season, and we and we wanted to reach out to provide an update.

  • 2020 Season Update: First off, we wanted to let you know that while all WHYFL board members want a 2020 season to happen, we cannot take any action (including opening registration) until the state reaches Phase Two of the recovery effort and the Town of West Hartford allows field permitting. Currently, the Town of West Hartford will not issue any field permits through June 15, 2020. Ensuring the health and safety of our players, coaches, volunteers and their families is our top priority, and we will base each of our decisions regarding the upcoming season with this in mind. We will continue to provide timely updates regarding registration and the upcoming season, once known.
  • Tackle Football Update: Last week, the Nutmeg Youth Football League approved membership applications for both Wethersfield and Woodland Junior Hawks. They will join West Hartford, Southington, Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury as full members of the league and participate at all tackle football levels.
  • Flag Football Update: With the field renovations now complete, we look forward to returning all flag football games to Sterling Field in the fall.
  • Call for Volunteers: While we may be in the offseason, we have a pressing need for the following volunteers:
    • head and assistant coaches for both tackle and flag (league will provide training and certification)
    • division directors for flag division (at all levels)
    • snack shack manager, and
    • field operations (to help with setup and teardown of fields on game day)

I wanted to close by thanking you all in advance for your patience as we navigate these uncertain times with the goal of having a 2020 season.

Please feel free to email me @ if you have any questions about the upcoming season, or if you would like to volunteer.

Thanks in advance.

John LaSpada
