"Throughout history the toughest competitors have been attracted to the toughest contests.  In the athletic arena - that contest is football.  Moreover, no other sport welcomes such a variety of teammates.  All are welcome: white, black, hispanic, short, tall, slow, fast, big, and small.  No other sport requires the degree of teamwork and unified effort the way football does.  It is and always will be America's sport, and our nation is better off for it.  As importantly, the characteristics the game shapes are indispensable as boys are transformed into men."
